France, Napoleon I Bonaparte. Bronze medal commemorating the retreat of the French Army from Russia, 1812, Andrieu & Galle, Denon, Bramsen 1168, Bronze 40 mm, weight 38,87 g., Condition aUNC, beautiful brown patina with luster.
The Russian campaign of 1812 ended in total defeat for Napoleon. It was largely due to the victualling difficulties of the Grand Army and problems in transportation. The multinationTal nature of the army also contributed to the defeat, which influenced, among other things, frequent desertions. As a result of the war, Napoleon's Grand Army essentially ceased to exist. Exact losses during the campaign, however, are difficult to determine. According to estimates, about 100 thousand soldiers returned from Russia, including 24 thousand Poles. 250 thousand people died in battle and died of disease, starvation and exhaustion; about 100 thousand were taken prisoner by the Russians. In addition, many thousands of soldiers deserted and disappeared, and their later fate is unknown. Source: historia.pl, by Waldemar Kowalski (PAP)
