Louise-Marie d'Orléans (1832-1850), Queen of the Belgians, died of tuberculosis on October 11, 1850, in Ostend, Belgium. She had been suffering from the disease for some time, and her health had been deteriorating, especially after a memorial service in August 1850, during which she was seen to need support in walking. She moved to Ostend by the sea because of the fresh air, but eventually succumbed to her illness.
She was only 38 years old. Known for her piety, tenderness, generosity and charity, she was deeply mourned by her family and people. Although he did not share her Catholic faith and was unfortunately not a particularly faithful husband, King Leopold I sincerely mourned his spouse and paid her a touching tribute: “Her death was sacred, as was her life.”
