Vatican / Papal State. Silver miniature medal with John Paul II, Silver 14 mm, weight 1,79 g. .800, Condition UNC
A nice bronze medallion with a hanging loop, issued by the Vatican in 1877 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of his episcopal consecration. Pope Pius IX was the longest reigning elected pope in the history of the Catholic Church. Pius IX was ordained pope in June 1846 and remained so until his death in February 1878, a period of 31 years of pontificate. The medal, designed by Bianchi, shows on the obverse a bust of Pius IX in a robe, facing left, with the legend "PAVIS.IX.PONT.MAX." around it and the word "BIANCHI" below. The reverse depicts papal symbols, including two crowns resting on a cushion, a staff and a cross with a radiant eagle/ dove above and the legend "EPISCOPATVS.AN.L.PONTIFICATVS.MAXIMI.XXXI." surrounding the design. A nice medal that is a worthy addition to any collection.
