On May 5, 1813, the city council decided to establish the Academy of Design, Architecture, Painting and Sculpture. Artists Pieter-Benedict De Maere and Pieter De Bruyne took the initiative under French rule. In the same year the French left, and in the turbulent period that followed, Pieter De Bruyne with his own training activities. The Kingdom of the Netherlands secured a resumption in 1818 under the name "Academy". This was later renamed the "Municipal Academy of Fine Arts" or SASK.
The term "Academy" is still used today.
