A commemorative very impressive medal (60 mm) in deep relief (in a 35 mm diameter variety with a ring for hanging on a ribbon). It was created in 1927 to honour those involved in reclaiming the city of Klaipėda (Memel) for Lithuania in 1923. The city was occupied by the Teutonic Knights in 1252 and was part of East Prussia until 1923. The Treaty of Versailles at the end of the First World War made the area a protectorate of the Allied States, but it was annexed by Lithuanian forces in 1923. In 1939, the city was reincorporated into Germany, but was returned to Lithuania in 1945. It is the only seaport in Lithuania of major economic importance. The medal was designed by Petras Rimša (1881-1961), widely regarded as one of Lithuania's leading sculptors and medallists, and the Huguenin Frères company of Le Locle, Switzerland, made 10,000 pcs. in 1927 (60mm and 35mm).
