Nivelles Prison was opened in 1908 as a detention and sentencing center. In the 1990s, the prison was completely renovated and two wings were added to it. Inspired by the new Austrian prisons of the time, Nivelles Prison was built in the shape of a Latin cross. Completed in 1904, it was considered one of the best-equipped prisons in the country and was already fully electrically lit. Over time, the prison was upgraded with workshops and a sports hall. By the 1980s, the buildings no longer met the required standards. It was therefore necessary to completely renovate the infrastructure and increase capacity to accommodate the ever-increasing number of inmates. The cell, whose original shape could be compared to a "T" at the base, was modified by building two new wings, giving it the shape of an inverted letter "E." Reopened in 1998, Nivelles Prison gradually reached a capacity of 192 inmates. Work was also undertaken to increase the security of the rear of the building (installation of a perimeter radar detection system and sheet metal panels at the rear of the courtyard).
