Marie Louise, the eldest daughter of Emperor Francis I, was married to Napoleon against her will after his separation from Josephine. On March 11, 1810, a long-distance wedding took place between the then 18-year-old archduchess and the French emperor; on this occasion Napoleon's longtime companion and close confidant, Alexandre Berthier, was sent to represent the French emperor at the ceremony. The official wedding of Napoleon and Marie Louise took place in Paris on April 1.
