On July 21, 1773, Pope Clement XIV decided to dissolve the Society of Jesus. The so-called suppression of the Jesuits was primarily linked to political issues. The order found itself on a collision course with, among others, the Bourbons ruling several countries in Western Europe. These monarchies and other Western states (e.g., Portugal) were moving toward enlightened absolutism at the time and were pressuring the papacy to dissolve the order, which ran schools and promoted Christianization worldwide. The Order was dissolved after the expulsion of its members from several countries and a financial scandal involving Father La Valette, who had borrowed money for commercial activities. When he was unable to repay the funds, the creditors turned to the Order, which, however, noted that the loan was contrary to the congregation’s principles and therefore refused to pay someone else’s debt. The court, however, ordered the Jesuits to repay the debt. Subsequently, Clement XIV dissolved the Order, which survived in Russia and Prussia. The rulers there refused to comply with the pope’s decisions, and additionally, St. Petersburg valued Jesuit education. On this basis, the Order was reestablished in 1814.
