Henryk Wieniawski International Violin Competition - a music competition for violinists under 30 years of age held every five years in Poznan, Poland, paying tribute to the Polish virtuoso and composer Henryk Wieniawski (1835-1880).
It is the oldest violin competition in the world. It was first held in 1935 in Warsaw. The international meetings of young violinists were initiated by Henryk's nephew, Adam Wieniawski, and organized by the Warsaw Music Society. Its purpose was to promote the composer's music and provide promotion for outstanding violinists. Subsequent editions were to be held every five years, but plans were interrupted by World War II. The second competition was organized after 17 years, in 1952 in Poznan. Since then, the competition is usually held every five years at the Adam Mickiewicz University Auditorium, and is organized by the Henryk Wieniawski Music Society of Poznan. In 2021, a pandemic caused the competition to be held after a six-year break in 2022.
The Henryk Wieniawski International Violin Competition is also the oldest European violin competition and a member and co-founder of the Geneva-based World Federation of International Music Competitions.
Since 1957, the violin competition has been accompanied by the Henryk Wieniawski International Violin Making Competition.
Jury members of the competition included Yehudi Menuhin (1996), Louis Persinger (1957 and 1962), Shlomo Mintz (2001), Neville Marriner (2006), Ida Haendel (2006), as well as Irena Dubiska, Grażyna Bacewicz, Konstanty Andrzej Kulka, Igor Oistrakh and Henryk Szeryng, Maksim Wiengerov (2011 and 2016).
