The founding of the Kórnik Library traditionally dates to 1826, when Tytus Dzialynski (1796-1861) inherited the Kórnik castle and began to accumulate his private book collection there. Over the following years Dzialynski traveled both within the borders of Poland's partitions and abroad, from where he brought back valuable collections. After his death, the collection of the book collection was continued by Tytus' son Jan Kanty Dzialynski (1829-1880). His successor and heir was Tytus' grandson and Jan's nephew, Wladyslaw Zamoyski (1853-1924). He, in agreement with his mother Jadwiga Zamoyska née Dzialynska (1831-1923) and his younger sister Maria Zamoyska (1860-1937), decided to establish the Zakłady Kórnickie Foundation, to which he transferred the management and care of the Kórnik Library. In 1953, the Library was incorporated into the Polish Academy of Sciences. The Library's collection numbers approx. 400,000 volumes, including 30,000 old prints and 15,000 manuscripts, including those of Adam Mickiewicz and Juliusz Słowacki as well as Napoleon Bonaparte.
