Poland, PRL (1952-1989). Order of the Banner of Labour, 2nd class, an award established by the Act of 2 July 1949 ‘to reward exceptional services rendered to the Nation and the State’, designed by Wojciech Jastrzębowski, Silver-plated metal, enamel 43 mm, Very Good Condition, original ribbon
Order of the Banner of Labour (1949-1992)
Approximately half of the 1st class orders and the vast majority of 2nd class orders were awarded to miners (an entry in the Miner's Card entitled the holder to a 2nd class order after 20 years of service and a 1st class order after 25 years of service; as late as 1991, 2,500 of these orders were awarded to miners). In the reality of the Polish People's Republic, receiving this order was the ambition of many people ending their professional careers, especially since it was associated with a pension supplement of 20% of the basic benefit (similar to some other Polish high decorations, commonly known as bread orders).
