The material of the present album is directly connected with the outstanding personality of Peter the Great, who took a steady interest in medals as historical documents. A number of medals reproduced in this book originally belonged to Peter's personal collection, which formed the basis of the numismatic Kunstkammer of the Academy of Sciences, later transformed to the Hermitage.
