Norbertus Petrus van den Berg (Rotterdam, November 5, 1831 - Amsterdam, January 8, 1917) was a Dutch banker, director and high official. He was president of the Bank of Java and later president of De Nederlandsche Bank (Dutch Central Bank).
Life and work
Mr. Van den Berg went to Batavia in the Dutch East Indies in 1855 to work for the Dutch Trading Company (NHM). In 1864, he moved to the Netherlands Indian Commercial Bank (NIH). Due to setbacks and disagreements, he resigned in 1872. A year later he became president of the Bank of Java, a position he held until 1889. During his presidency, he strongly advocated a transition from the silver standard to the gold standard, leading to the passage of the Dutch East Indies in 1877, just as the Netherlands had done two years earlier. In 1889, Van den Berg was appointed director of De Nederlandsche Bank, of which he became president two years later. After twenty-one years, the 80-year-old Van den Berg was replaced by Gerard Vissering.
In 1892, Van den Berg was elected a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW). After his retirement in 1912, he was awarded the Grand Cross of the Dutch Lion, the highest Dutch decoration.
