Located on Boulevard Voltaire, the Church of Saint Ambroise was built between 1863 and 1868 under the direction of architect Théodore Ballu, shortly after the construction of Boulevard du Prince-Eugène (former name of Boulevard Voltaire). It replaced another church called Notre-Dame de la Procession, which stood a little farther away, roughly on the site of the square, and which was subsequently demolished. Saint-Ambroise was not consecrated by Cardinal Léon-Adolphe Amette until December 7, 1910.
