Napoleon established the Rhine Confederation in 1806, a league of German states allied with France to replace the Holy Roman Empire. As part of this process, Bavaria and Württemberg, along with other states, were elevated to the status of kingdoms and gained full sovereignty. Although these states gained sovereignty, they remained under French protection and were obliged to provide military support to Napoleon's forces. The formation of the Confederation of the Rhine and Napoleon's subsequent actions led to the formal dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire in 1806. Bavaria and Württemberg became key members of the Confederation of the Rhine, playing a significant role in Napoleon's reorganization of Germany.
