The Miraculous Image of Ettal
The representation, made of white marble, shows the Mother of God, Mary, lovingly holding the infant Jesus on her lap. Originally the statue was painted, but since the Baroque period it has been decorated with precious robes.
The cult of the miraculous image began immediately after the foundation of the monastery. The faithful from near and far came in pilgrimages to Ettal to pray before the Mother of God and ask her for protection and help. Numerous votive gifts and candles testify to the answered prayers of past centuries. The deep devotion led to the construction of several chapels, including the Brünnlkapelle in Haimhausen and the Maria Mühlberg pilgrimage chapel near Waging. To this day, groups of pilgrims often undertake pilgrimages lasting several days to the shrine in Ettal.
The miraculous image is not only a work of art of impressive beauty, but also a symbol of deeply rooted tradition. It invites visitors to spend a moment of reflection and prayer in the basilica of Ettal Monastery.
