Margaret of Austria (born January 10, 1480 in Brussels, died December 1, 1530 in Mechelen) - daughter of Emperor Maximilian I and Maria of Burgundy, governor of the Netherlands from 1507 to January 1515 and from 1517 until her death. After the death of her brother Philip the Beautiful, Margaret became governor of the Netherlands on March 18, 1507. In addition, she was the guardian of her nephew Charles and his sisters Eleonora, Isabella and Maria. Margaret's residence became Mechelen, where she built a palace. Among others, Erasmus of Rotterdam stayed at her court. The goal of her policy was to regain Burgundy. After the Burgundian states recognized her nephew Charles as of age on January 5, 1515, Margaret lost her office as governor. In 1516 Charles assumed the Spanish throne and the following year appointed Margaret again as governor. In 1529 she concluded the Peace of Cambrai with Louise of Savoy, ending the war between King Charles V of Germany and Spain and King Francis I of France. The peace was made by women (the French king's mother and the German ruler's aunt) because the two rulers did not want to talk to each other. source: wikipedia.org
