Saint-Gilles Prison has been in existence since 1884. It houses remand prisoners, convicts and male internees. The prison also has a secure clinical observation center and a medical-surgical center to treat inmates from other prisons. Built according to the Ducpétiaux model, the Saint-Gilles prison was commissioned in 1884 to replace the Petits-Carmes prison in downtown Brussels. To address overcrowding in this prison, the Forest prison was opened in 1910. Between the wars, it housed only convicts. They spent their days in the communal regime and worked in industrial workshops. During World War II, the prison was in the hands of the German occupiers. Between 1945 and 1950, the prison`s daily population increased to 2,100 due to the mass conviction of collaborators. Source: justice.belgium.be
