The battalion was involved in intense combat throughout January, culminating in the capture of the village of Putscheid (Pëtschent) on January 28, 1945, after several days of severe fighting. The 5th Infantry Division, known as the "Red Diamond," was part of Lt. Gen. George S. Patton`s Third U.S. Army and played a crucial role in pushing German forces back during this period.
