Battle of Jena-Auerstedt - a series of two battles fought on October 14, 1806 by the Napoleonic army under Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte against the Prussian forces of King Frederick William III during the Prussian campaign. As a result, the French army smashed the Prussian army, and as a result of its pursuit, the entire Kingdom of Prussia came under French rule. At the Battle of Jena, Napoleon`s 95,000-strong army smashed the 38,000-strong army of Prince Frederick Ludwig Hohenlohe to the ground. More than 25,000 Prussians were killed, wounded and taken into French captivity. The war conquest was also impressive - 20 cannons and 30 banners. At the Battle of Auerstedt, French Marshal Louis Nicolas Davout defeated a more numerous Prussian force under the personal command of King Frederick William III, who had fled with 63,000 men the night before the Battle of Jena. Davout encountered them with his three divisions (27,000 men), commanded by the so-called Three Immortals (Friant, Gudin and Morand), and beat the enemy to the ground. Bonaparte, having learned of his marshal`s victory, initially refused to believe the strength of the enemy. To the courier who brought the report, he said: "Your commander sees double" (which referred to Davout`s poor eyesight). He then spared no praise and a rain of decorations rained down on Davout`s corps. But in the army`s official bulletin, Bonaparte recognized the Battle of Auerstedt as a fragment of the Battle of Jena, i.e. its right wing. Contemporaries believed that Napoleon was jealous of the fame. After the practical elimination of Prussia from the war with the Fourth Anti-French Coalition, the Prussian campaign focused mainly on the pursuit of the shattered Prussian army, and the capture of more strongholds, until French forces entered the Prussian partition of Poland and the so-called by Napoleon "Polish War of Liberation" with Russia began. source: wikipedia
