Kingdom of Macedon. Alexander III the Great, 336-323 BC. AR Tetradrachm 323-317 BC, or slightly later, uncertain eastern mint, wheel symbol on official issues from Babylon mint, Price -, but cf. under Philip III Price 187-202, silver 25 mm, weight 16,8 g., condition Good VF, minor roughness, patina
Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin / AΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ, Zeus Aëtophoros seated left, holding eagle and sceptre, wheel in left field.
Probably contemporary imitation. The peculiar style and retrograde N in the legend all point to this coin be an unofficial issue rather than a unique variety in the name of Alexander. Similar piece has been recorded twice: CNG 2011, lot 87/682 (same dies), Ira & Larry Goldberg 2014, lot 81/1514.
