Historically, Wangerooge is the only island belonging to Oldenburg. After changing hands several times, the Jeverland region and the island ultimately became part of the Duchy (later Grand Duchy) of Oldenburg in 1818. For this reason, the lighthouse still bears the monogram of the then Grand Duke of Oldenburg, Nicholas Frederick Peter (1853–1900) (the monogram “P”).
