The Duchy of Warsaw (French: Duché de Varsovie; German: Herzogtum Warschau) – a Polish state that existed from 1807 to 1815 and was linked to the Kingdom of Saxony by a personal union. Formally independent, with its own constitution, Sejm, Senate, government, and army, as well as a sovereign ruler, who was the King of Saxony. In reality, it was a territory dependent on the French Empire, subordinate to Napoleon Bonaparte as Emperor of the French and Protector of the Confederation of the Rhine, of which the Kingdom of Saxony was a part. Established in 1807 under the Treaty of Tilsit from parts of the Prussian partition. In 1809, as a result of the war with Austria, it was expanded to include part of the Austrian partition. In June 1812, it was formally transformed by the General Confederation (the confederated Sejm) into the Kingdom of Poland. From February 1813, it was occupied by the Russian army. At the Congress of Vienna in 1815, it was divided among Russia, Prussia, and Austria, with most of the territory going to Russia, where the Kingdom of Poland, subordinate to Russia, was established.
