The Javan tiger (Panthera tigris sondaica) was an extinct subspecies of the Asian tiger, a mammal of the cat family (Felidae). Until 1980, it inhabited the island of Java; it was one of three subspecies (along with the Balinese and Sumatran tigers) found in Indonesia.
Description
Javan tigers were small compared to tigers from mainland Asia, but larger than Bali tigers. Males weighed between 100 and 140 kg, and their average body length was 200–245 cm. Females were smaller, weighing 75–115 kg. The Javan tiger’s snout was long and narrow.
Extinction
At the beginning of the 20th century, Java was home to 28 million people. Annual rice production was insufficient to feed the growing population, so more and more land was cleared for cultivation each year. This led to the deforestation of the forests where the Javan tiger lived.
In 1938, 23% of Java was covered by natural forests. By 1975, this figure had dropped to just 8%, while the population had grown to 85 million people. As a result, the Javan tiger became extinct—it no longer had a natural habitat.
Other reasons for the extinction of the Javan tiger:
- After World War II, natural forests were often converted into coffee, rubber, and teak plantations.
- The Sunda sambar, the Javan tiger’s primary prey, was frequently affected by disease in the 1960s.
- After 1965, many people went hunting and killed the remaining Javan tigers.
